This year is the 39th convocation of Rabindra Bharati University

Venue: Jorasankho Thakurbari

Time: 10 am

“We have decided to confer honoris DLit on eminent painter Dhirendranath Bramha who is around 90 years old and the second DLit will be awarded to veteran actor Sabitri Chattopadhyay. They have been chosen by the executive council — the highest decision making body of the university.

“The decision of EC was ratified by the court which was then given a green signal by Governor M K Narayanan who is also the chancellor of all state varsities,” said vice-chancellor of RBU, Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury.

“RBU usually gives importance to celebrated personalities in the field of music, visual arts, literature and social sciences while selecting names for awarding DLit degrees. Last year we had decided to confer DLit to Sabitri Chattopadhyay. But she had informed the authorities about her illness and hence it could not have been conferred on her in absentia. This year we have again proposed her name. Dhirendranath Brahma is a stalwart painter and it is high time to reward his contribution to the field of art,” added Basu Roychowdhury.

The West Bengal State Academy Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts Awards which is a part of RBU will be conferred on Alokananda Roy for her contribution to dance, Arun Mukhopadhyay for his achievements in theatre, Barun Chakraborty for his contribution to folk culture, lyricist Abhijit Bandapadhyay and celebrated painter Laloo Prasad Shau.

The university will award DLit to one student while another 40 students will be conferred PhD degrees. Narayanan will preside over the convocation.
