650 seats vacant at IITs make them go for second round of counselling

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will go through a second round of allotments by JEE (Advanced) to fill up all the seats because still the seats are lying vacant.

Of the 9,711 students selected for the admissions process after clearing JEE (Advanced), 9,061 have accepted admissions and the remaining 650, who got an opportunity to study in the institutes, rejected the offers as per reports.

As many as 27,151 of the 1.26 lakh candidates who took the test qualified.

This year a rare situation takes place where the seats in general category are vacant. Cases have taken place where seats were found vacant in reserved category. Various seats are vacant this year in IITs across the nation after the first round of admission.

Joint online choice filling and seat allocation portal that is conducting the process also made it mandatory for all applicants to choose a minimum of 50 choices when they select the stream and institute of their choice in the central counselling process to ensure that all the seats in the 16 IITs and ISM, Dhanbad, are filled.


As per stats, IIT-Bombay continued to be the top choice for engineering aspirants with 58 of the top 100 rankers joining the institution and Computer Science emerged as the most popular course with out of top 10 rankers, nine opted for the course in at IIT-B.

Web release for second round seat allocation is expected on July 07.
